U.S. Seeks to Strengthen Uranium Reserve Amid Nuclear Power Push

September 16, 2025

The U.S. Energy Department, led by Energy Secretary Chris Wright, is pushing to expand the country’s strategic uranium reserve. This move is intended to help reduce reliance on Russian supplies and shore up the long-term reliability of nuclear power as demand for electricity rises with the economy’s increasing electrification.

Russia currently supplies about 25% of the enriched uranium used by America’s 94 nuclear reactors, which generate roughly 20% of the nation’s electricity. Questioning how quickly U.S. utilities can stop depending on Russia without risking shortages, officials are suggesting U.S. stockpiles should be built up to provide a buffer—for supply security and to give confidence to the nuclear energy sector.

Meanwhile, uranium-related stocks jumped after the announcement. Companies like Uranium Energy Corp., Cameco, and Energy Fuels saw strong gains, as investors responded positively to the government’s proposed approach to strengthening uranium reserves.
