Biden administration plans to triple US nuclear energy capacity by 2050

November 13, 2024

The Biden administration’s roadmap to triple U.S. nuclear energy capacity by 2050 involves adding 200 GW through new reactor construction, restarts, and power upgrades. It includes plans for 35 GW of nuclear capacity by 2035, scaling up to 15 GW annually by 2040.

The strategy also promotes deploying gigawatt-scale reactors, modular reactors, and microreactors, with potential use of former coal and nuclear plant sites. Critics argue that nuclear expansion could bring environmental risks, but supporters see it as crucial for a net-zero emissions target.
